Let me start by saying that I absolutely love my two dogs to pieces, and being able to have them in the office with me all day is wonderful – I wouldn’t have it any other way. That said, Poppy and Freckles can make a lot of stink for two little dogs.

I have a feeling that’s why, for Christmas, my PA Hannah got me a CMYK Aroma Diffuser and Tisserand essential oils. It’s a great little machine that you fill with water and a few drops of your favourite essential oil, which it then vaporises, making the whole room smell subtly like lavender, eucalyptus, jasmine, or whichever oils you decide to burn that day.

At first, I chose the eucalyptus from the little starter set she gave me with the diffuser and it was so relaxing that it’s now become part of my bedtime routine. And because it’s a humidifier, it helped with the typical cold-weather stuffy nose. I also love the simple white and wood design, and the fact that it can light up with any colour you choose, or stay on a continual cycle through the whole colour wheel.

Ok, I was sold. I ordered another one for the office… and then another one after that to sit on the window sill behind my desk. Here’s where the business side of this comes in though – certain scents can actually improve & encourage productivity. Aromatherapy isn’t just for massages and relaxation; it can be used to encourage a range of moods and feelings. Research shows that jasmine and rosemary are some of the best oils to encourage productivity, so I ordered a few of those for the office and kept my eucalyptus and lavender upstairs by my bed!

Hannah and I went through the jasmine oil in about a week and a half because it smelled great and woke us up at the same time. Typical that it’s one of the most expensive oils to buy! Next I think we’ll try rose, and maybe peppermint if it doesn’t smell too much like Christmas! Here’s a handy guide to aromatherapy oils, all of which work great in the CMYK diffuser:

Rosemary – stimulant; wakes you up

Jasmine – reduces stress without slowing you down, great for those days where you have too much to do and too little time

Peppermint – refreshing, energy boosting

Juniper – detoxifying, cleansing, purifies energy of working environment

Basically anything citrus – great for a pick-me-up and a fresh clean scent!

Lavender – stress relieving, relaxing, heals headaches and migraines

Eucalyptus – great for decongestion, healing headaches

Cedarwood – apparently supports emotional health and healthy skin.

And on a final note, Hannah just found out you can buy coffee essential oil – guess whose office is going to smell like a Starbucks next week?!
